Volcano and Earthquake Alerts
Costa Rica is within the Ring of Fire, the long tectonic belt of volcanos and earthquakes through Central America. In the Central Valley, it’s advised to stay alert for activity, ash fall and air quality. The Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVISCORI) is a research institute within Universidad Nacional Costa Rica. They monitor seismic and volcanic activity across the nation through a seismographic telemetered network comprised of 25 stations. Updates are made continuously, 24/7.
Poas is an active phreatic volcano controlled by a hyperacid crater lake. Depending on its activity and wind direction, alerts are issued for air quality and ashfall. OVISCORI’s website posts volcanic activity updates along with webcams of all volcanos and earthquake data.
